5 Steps to Keep Warm This Winter Season – WITHOUT touching your thermostat

According to The Weather Channel, this winter could be one of the warmest winters we’ve had here in the Midwest. Though from day to day, it seems as though our opinion of this season shifts as much as the temperature does. This constant change in temperature makes the temptation to crank up the thermostat on colder days to keep warm even more appealing.

However, there are some steps you can take in order to help keep your rooms warmer – without resorting to the constant fiddling with the thermostat.

Here are our 5 Steps to make your home warmer:

  1. Rearrange the Furniture.
    • Make sure you are not blocking any vents – this would disrupt your home’s air flow.
    • Move furniture away from externals walls and closer to heat sources if available
  2. Use quilts/thick blankets on your windows to keep heat in. However, if you are home during the day, you can keep the shades open if the sun is out.
  3. Find those pesky drafty areas – and fill them with draft sealer. All of those annoying small cracks and drafts between your doors and windows can be door draft sealercosting you additional $, plus this is very low cost solution.
    • Also, having a door draft guard/stopper helps to keep out the cold breeze. There are a whole variety of these – from very cost effective options to cute designs – just depending on your particular taste.
  4. Keep the fans on low and circulating in a clockwise direction. This will help to keep warm air near the floor (where you and your family are).
  5. Purchase a DIY Window Insulation Kit, sold at your local home improvement store.
