5 Things to Check BEFORE You Turn Your Furnace On

It’s been a wonderful past few months of weather, but sadly now we must acknowledge the cold months ahead. Cold weather means that you actually have to think about that ol’ furnace again. However, that doesn’t mean you should run straight over there to crank it up! After letting your furnace sit around for such a long period of time, it’s not going to appreciate simply being turned on and expected to work perfectly.

SO since it’s not quite so cold you need it yet (after all, it is only the first week of October…), here are 5 things you can check to BEFORE you finally turn your furnace on:

Your 5 Step Furnace Maintenance Checklist:

1. Your Air Filter. Depending on its’ condition, you will either need to clean or replace it before you turn on your unit. We recommend changing your filters monthly, especially if you have an older unit or particularly sensitive household members (allergies, pets, children).

2. Your Registers/Vents. Look around your house to make sure that none of your registers or vents are being blocked. It is important to have all of your registers open to maximize your heating system’s efficiency for your home.

3. Your Carbon Monoxide Alarm. Change out the batteries in your alarm and test to make sure the detector is working properly. If you don’t have an alarm already, you should definitely consider one.

4. Your Furnace’s “Personal Space”. Just like your AC unit, your furnace needs room to breathe in order to function properly. Removing anything close by to the unit will also ensure help to keep your home safe from a fire hazard.

5. Your Thermostat. After you have checked all of the other items, it’s a good idea to see if your thermostat is working properly as well. (And of course get some new batteries!)

Lastly, for the best furnace maintenance, we always recommend that you give your furnace an annual Clean & Check  from a qualified technician.
